Aachen was heavily damaged during World War II. It was taken by the Allies on October 21, 1944; the first German city to be captured. Aachen was destroyed partially ¡ª and in some parts completely ¡ª during the fighting, mostly by American artillery fire and demolitions by Waffen-SS defenders.
